The blood was pounding in his ears, keeping time with his breathing as Harry ran. He was out of breath, hadn‟t run so far or so fast for years. Not since last time the Doctor had enlisted his help, in feet. He could hear the noise of his pursuer. Occasionally the ground at his feet exploded, or chips flew from the stonework of the house.

He raced along the terrace, risking a glance backwards. The bigger of the men was still following him. He couldn‟t see Bardell. Maybe he had given up. Or maybe he had gone for help. Or maybe... An unpleasant possibility occurred to Harry. This was the third side of the house he had run along.

What if...

And even as the thought occurred to him, Bardell appeared round the corner in front of him. His handgun was raised, his expressionless face sighting along it as he held it in both hands.

It took Harry less than a second to realise and then admit to himself that this was it. There was no way he could escape now. So he did not even try. He dropped his own handgun to the ground and raised his hands. He thought they might shoot him anyway. But Bardell relaxed slightly, though he still kept the gun aimed as he approached.

„Mr Sullivan,‟ he said in his gravel-like voice as he reached Harry. „How nice to see you again.‟

„The pleasure‟s all yours,‟ Harry said. Then he doubled over in pain as the other, bigger man reached round from behind and thumped him in the stomach. He collapsed to the ground, retching.

Bardell kicked Harry‟s gun away, off the terrace and into the low hedge that surrounded one of the rose beds.

As he got his breath back, Harry looked up at the two large men above him. Bardell was standing watching him, the gun at his side. But the other man, the huge man with no neck, was raising his Heckler and Koch. In a moment it was pointing directly at Harry‟s head.

„Not yet, Mr Hertman,‟ Bardell said, reaching out and pushing the gun aside.

But Hertman pushed it back again. He was still staring at Harry along the gun.

„We need to question him, to see if he is alone,‟ Bardell said. „And he will be a useful hostage.‟

„We should implement a security regime as I suggested.‟

Hertman‟s voice was a tortured rasp of sound. His finger tightened on the trigger. „And hostages may escape. No, Mr Bardell, we kill him now.‟

There was a flicker of emotion, of expression, on Bardell‟s face. A frown perhaps. „Mr Cutter will want to question this man.‟

„No,‟ Hertman said.

„Are you disobeying a direct order?‟ Bardell snapped.

Hertman glanced at him, then looked back at Harry. „No more orders,‟ he said. „Not from you or Cutter. You have demonstrated your inefficiency. Your arrogance and laxity have inhibited your performance and endangered the plan.

That cannot be tolerated.‟

There was a definite air of anger about Bardell now. „How dare you?‟ he roared. „You question the chain of command?‟

„The chain of command is invalid.
